Differences Between a USB Port and a USB Hub

USB cable

USB technology is one of the most widely-used types of connections in external data transfer today; they are present in almost every computer. USB ports and hubs are in some ways the same and in some ways they are different.

Function

The USB port provides a connection from the port to whatever the other end of the connection is linked to, such as a computer. For example, an USB port is used to transfer data from a camera to a computer via USB cable. An USB hub, on the other hand, is a device that provides many USB connections, meaning that it actually contains USB ports within itself. For instance, an USB hub is used expand the number of USB connections available in a computer. A good analogy is that an USB hub provides many USB connections just like a Internet router provides many Internet connections.

Size

An USB hub is considerably larger than an USB port because it contains many USB ports within itself. See the pictures in the resources.

Connection

An USB port is directly connected to the device that it transfers data to. For example, in a computer, the USB port is connected directly to the motherboard of the computer. On the other hand, an USB hub needs to be connected to an USB port.
