X reverses course in Brazil

Elon Musk’s social platform, formerly known as Twitter, is engaged in a conflict with Brazil’s Supreme Court over compliance with court directives related to blocking specific accounts and settling fines. The Supreme Court, led by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, had issued orders to X, prompting a temporary suspension of operations in Brazil. X faced a ban and warnings from Moraes, but eventually resumed services in the country. During the ban period, Brazilian users shifted to alternative platforms like Bluesky and Tumblr. X has remained silent on the matter, with Musk and other key figures choosing not to comment, but the platform expressed a willingness to collaborate with the Brazilian government to restore services promptly.

Compliance Issues Arise in Face of Supreme Court Orders

It appears that Elon Musk’s social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, is navigating a standoff with Brazil’s Supreme Court. According to The New York Times, a recent court submission revealed that X has taken steps to adhere to the court’s directives, such as blocking specified accounts, settling fines, and appointing a new authorized representative within the nation.

Legal Back-and-Forth Between X and the Supreme Court

In response to X‘s actions, the Supreme Court asserted that the necessary documentation had not been furnished and granted a five-day ultimatum for compliance. The conflict originated from an inquiry by Justice Alexandre de Moraes regarding electoral disinformation. Following Moraes’ instruction to X to block certain accounts, the platform initially indicated compliance but eventually ceased operations in Brazil.

Ban, Threats, and Return to Online Operation

Subsequently, Moraes banned X and cautioned users against circumventing the ban through VPNs, imposing fines for non-compliance. X resumed its services in Brazil earlier this week, with Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince dismissing any correlation between the platform’s Cloudflare infrastructure transition and its return as mere coincidence.

Shift in User Behavior and Future Plans

During the prohibition period, Brazilian users explored alternative social media platforms, fueling significant growth for Bluesky and Tumblr. Despite the developments, X has yet to respond to inquiries from TechCrunch, and notable figures like Musk and X’s Global Government Affairs account have refrained from commenting on the issue. Nevertheless, X expressed intentions to collaborate with the Brazilian government to swiftly restore services for the Brazilian populace.
